A dwindling beachfront in recent years was herding revelers into ever-closer quarters. No more. Last fall, the Army Corps of Engineers working 24/7 completed a beach reconstruction in two months. Despite resulting controversy over a new, super tall beach dune that, while ecologically sound, blocks a good portion of the ocean view, you can look forward to a little more space to spread out your beach towels this summer.
The Blue Surf Motel, a long-time Bethany Beach landmark that was located directly behind the town bandstand … is gone. In its place will be a gleaming new condo building featuring three restaurants and ten retail stores—and of course the condos, 13 of them, featuring a swimming pool, parking and storage areas. If you’re interested in buying (and are good for the cool million) check it out.
The South Coastal Library on Kent Avenue is temporarily closed for renovations that will more than double its size. In the meantime, the library has been relocated to a small space beside the Food Lion in Millville, 203 Atlantic Avenue in Creekside Plaza. Learn more about the South Coastal Library reconstruction project from the Friends of the South Coastal Library Web site.
Good news for cyclists, runners and other folks who use the bike lanes along Coastal Highway 1 while traffic whizzes by: 11.5 miles of bicycle-friendly rumble strips throughout a 17-mile corridor from just south of Dewey Beach to just north of Fenwick Island installed by the Delaware Department of Transportation. The strips have been shown effective in alleviating crashes from drivers running off the road.
The town council voted in February 2008 to draft smoking prohibitions for the beach and boardwalk during the summer; and for the parks and bandstand all year. Eight designated smoking areas would be created along the back of the beach. So starting May 1, expect to keep your butts off the beach!
Add a brand new grocery store to your Bethany Beach grocery shopping list, especially for those midnight runs for munchies (or formula!). Harris Teeter, located at the intersection of routes 54 and 20 near the Bayside Community. Location: Bayside Village Center, 31221 Americana Pkwy, Selbyville, DE 19975 (302) 436-2827. Open 24 hrs. The Pharmacy is open 9am-9pm Mon-Fri, 9am-7pm Sat and Noon-6pm Sun.
It looks mah-veh-lous, and it is so much easier to navigate. If you have visited the Town of Bethany Beach Web site before, you'll be pleasantly surprised. Check it out at
