Bethany Beach Essentials

When to Go

July and August turn the "Quiet Resorts" into a kind of quiet madhouse. Route 1 is jammed, as are the restaurants, and the beach is elbow-to-elbow as far as the eye can see. While summertime at the beach has its charm (and the only option for midweek vacations for families tied down by the academic calendar), the shoulder season can be thoroughly enjoyable as well. Early June often brings lovely weather and low crowds, but many businesses are already in full swing. Fall brings a variety of events to the beach, beautiful weather, lower prices and (again) less of a crowd. Even winter has its unique appeal. It’s a wonderful time of year to explore the area with empty roadways, and because many businesses are closed you may wander further in search of good restaurants and activities.

Getting There

By car
If traveling by car, Route 1 should be avoided during peak season as it gets crowded and slow, with frequent red light stops along the way. Route 113 is the best alternative. The Bethany-Fenwick Chamber of Commerce publishes detailed directions from various points: see their driving directions to Bethany Beach.

By air

Salisbury-Wicomico Regional Airport (SBY) – Salisbury, MD
About a 30-minute drive to the Bethany Beach. Salisbury is served by US Airways.

Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) – Philadelphia, PA
Philadelphia is about a two-hour drive to Bethany Beach, and is served by many major US and International airlines.

Visitor Information

Stop by the Bethany-Fenwick Area Chamber of Commerce for brochures and helpful area information or request their visitor's guide online. The chamber is open all year, but check the web site for specific hours and days.

A number of local tabloid newspapers offer a wealth of information on the Bethany Beach area. You can pick these up at grocery stores and other area establishments.

Getting Oriented

Routes 1 and 26: Traversing Bethany from North to South along the coast is Coastal Highway 1 (Route 1). Many businesses, as well as the Sea Colony Resort, are directly visible from Route 1. Beginning East and ending at the ocean at its westernmost point is Route 26--another primary thoroughfare in Bethany Beach, with restaurants, grocery stores and a host of other establishments stretching West. In Bethany Beach, Route 26 is Garfield Parkway. It becomes Atlantic Avenue further West toward Ocean View and Millville, then changes names a few more times as it meanders on to its end.
Downtown: Downtown Bethany beach can be found on Garfield Parkway. It features a diminuative boardwalk, lots of eateries, boutiques and shops, the Town Hall, and the Fire Station and Police Department.

South Bethany: Located south of the Sea Colony resort, South Bethany is a residential community on the South Delaware coast between the bay and ocean. South Bethany Beach even has its own Web site: www.southbethany.org.

Ocean View and Millville: These towns, located on Route 26, are an extension of the Bethany Beach resort area to the West and offer a host of businesses to support the vacationing crowds in addition to the local population.

Fenwick Island: Fenwick Island is immediately south of Bethany Beach on Route 1, featuring the whisper quiet Delaware Seashore State Park, expansive vacation homes, and an explosion of businesses as it stretches South toward Ocean City, MD.

Town Information

Dogs: Dogs are prohibited on the beach and boardwalk from May 15 to Sept 30. When permitted, dogs must be leashed and curbed, and cleaned up after, at all times.

Parking: If you need to park in town, know that parking meters are in effect from May 15 to Sept 15, and are strictly enforced 7 days a week. Do not let your meter lapse--you will get a ticket. Bill changers are located throughout town to obtain quarters. You can also purchase a parking permit (daily and weekly rates available) at the Town Hall, Police Department, or the Change and Information Booth at the boardwalk end of Garfield Parkway.

The South Coastal Library offers a variety of programs and activities throughout the year.
