Assateague Island, made up of the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge and the Assateague Island National Seashore, offers serene, undeveloped beaches, wild ponies, and wildlife in spades. The fishing village of Chincoteague provides a gateway to Assateague with boutiques and restaurants. You can rent a bike to explore the town. The next Chincoteague Wild Pony Swim will be held on the last Wednesday of July 2009. On that day, around 40,000 visitors will wait along the shore to observe the three minute swim from Assateague Island to Chincoteague.

Lewes (pronounced Loo-is) is Delaware's oldest town. It's a great place for a walking tour of historic homes and sites, museums, shops and restaurants; and is situated not far from it's own beach. Nearby is Cape Henlopen State Park The town is the southern terminus of the Cape May-Lewes Ferry, described below.

About 20 miles north of Bethany Beach, the Cape May-Lewes Ferry shuttles passengers 17 miles across the Delaware Bay between Lewes, Delaware and Cape May, New Jersey. You can make the trip with your vehicle, or opt to take advantage of shuttle bus service that runs passengers between the Cape May terminal and the Victorian town of Cape May. From Lewes, the 80 minute ferry voyage begins at a large terminal that features a gift shop and restaurants.

The ten-mile trek to Rehoboth Beach (North of Bethany Beach) doesn't necessarily make it a trip for the entire day, but when summer traffic is thick you may want to make it worth the drive and stay for a while. Rehoboth has a lot to offer -- stylish restaurants (as well as pizza and ice cream), fun boutiques, arcades and an amusement park along the boardwalk (preschoolers and early elementary kids will find loads of rides suited just for them). Just north of town is plenty of tax-free outlet shopping (perfect - although crowded - on a rainy day).
