Delaware Seashore State Park Map
Six miles of ocean and bay shoreline outline Delaware Seashore State Park, with the Atlantic Ocean to the East, and Rehoboth and Indian River Bays to the West. The park offers camping, cottages, a marina, bathhouses, snacks, rentals (umbrellas, chairs, boogie boards, rafts - daily & weekly). Activities include swimming (guarded beaches), sunbathing, fishing, clabbing, clamming, boating, sailing, windsurfing, kayaking, hiking and nature walks. Myriad summer programs are offered, including kayak trips, beach driving clinics, boat tours, naturalist-led ecological talks, family activities and more. View the 2007 program brochure (pdf) for examples, or pick up a copy at the Indian River Lifewsaving Station.
Burton's Island--temporarily inaccessible while the Indian River bridge construction is underway--features a short nature trail offering views of the salt marshes and bay islands, where gulls and terns gather in their noisy summer nesting colonies. Thompson Island Preserve, located northwest of the Inlet, may feature some tours led by Delaware Seashore State Park staff. Check the program guide. The preserve serveds as an example of the productive salt marsh habitat once common around inland bays. Due to its importance to local wildlife, human activities on the island are limited, and no motor vehicle access or parking is available.
